[APRIL 19, 2005]  Zonta Club of Lincoln has awarded four $1,000 health career scholarships to the following individuals:

Heather Hill, a junior at St. Ambrose University, Davenport, Iowa, is studying psychology with a bio-psychology concentration. Her professional goal is to be a physical therapist in a sports medicine clinic and eventually open her own clinic. She has been accepted into the doctorate of physical therapy class of 2007. Her desire to become a physical therapist began at a very young age. Heather knows firsthand the daily struggles disabled people face since she has an older brother physically challenged with cerebral palsy. She is president of Alpha Chi, vice president of the Student Government Association and involved with campus fundraising activities to help St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. She is on the national and St. Ambroise dean's lists. Heather is an Olympia High School graduate. Her parents are Eric and Mary Hill of Atlanta.

Abrigail Sasse, a sophomore at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana campus, is studying animal science with a minor in food science. Her professional goal is to become a veterinarian. To gain practical experience in her area of interest, Abrigail has worked as a kennel technician as well as a veterinary assistant. She is a College of ACES James Scholar and has been on the dean's list every semester. She is a member of the Pre-Vet Club and U of I Meats Judging Team. She lives in the 4-H House and in 2004 was recognized as the freshman with the highest grade-point average. Abrigail is a Lincoln Community High School graduate. Her parents are David and Gail Sasse of Beason.

Rebecca Hahn, a junior at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, is majoring in nursing with a minor in biology. She would like to become a nurse practitioner or advanced practice nurse. She has worked as a student float nurse at a medical center and has experience as an endoscopy technician. She also has been a CPR volunteer instructor for the Red Cross. She has been accepted into the Summer III Nursing experience at Mayo Clinic this summer. She is a member of Sigma Kappa and Sigma Theta Tau, a nursing honors sorority. Rebecca is a Lincoln Community High School graduate. Her parents are Richard and Paula Kaler of Lincoln.

Thomas Maske, a freshman at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana campus, is studying animal science with a concentration in pre-vet and biotechnology. His professional goal is to become a veterinarian. His rural background has given him practical experience with cattle and swine. He is a Jonathan Baldwin Turner Scholar, James Scholar and is on the dean's list. He is a member of Alpha Gamma Rho, an agriculture fraternity. Thomas is a graduate of Mount Pulaski High School. His parents are Michael and Kathy Maske of Mount Pulaski.

The judges were Dolan Dalpoas, administrator at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital; Roger Michaelson, teacher at Hartsburg-Emden Junior-Senior High School; Joyce Conrady, administrator at Mason City Area Nursing Home; Beth Johnson, Zonta member and chiropractor at Allied Health Chiropractic in Lincoln; and Melissa Hardiek, M.D., Zonta member and doctor at Lincoln Health Care Specialists in Lincoln.

Zonta International is a worldwide service organization of executives in business and the professions working together to advance the status of women.
