'Convenience ruins competition'         Send a link to a friend

Dear Editor:

In response to the two letters about Wal-Mart, all I have to say is that these two women are right -- Wal-Mart is cheaper than most retailers on 90 percent or better of their items. [Letters posted Dec. 7: 1, 2. More.]

But the point that I wanted to make was this: Yes, Wal-Mart is cheaper; anyone who imports most of their merchandise is bound to pay a lot less than right here in America -- that's beside my point. What happens when a Supercenter comes in is this: Yes, more people will shop there, causing more revenue due to the fact that it will be more convenient for the shoppers to buy all their groceries and everything else at Wal-Mart instead of getting household goods there and groceries at Kroger or IGA. I don't care what anyone says -- convenience ruins competition. That's my point, and besides the fact that OUR taxpayer dollars are repaying the world's largest retailer -- and might I add that Wal-Mart has made at least a billion dollars off incentives towns like ours give them to come or to expand.

[to top of second column in this letter]

If I am wrong, I will ask for a front-page column from Jeff Nelson at The Courier and admit my mistake.

This company is ruthless and could care less about our community.

The mayor's phone is apparently ringing off the hook from retailers AROUND THE COUNTRY wanting to build, contingent only on Super Wal-Mart?? I would like to see a list of these companies because it's a hard pill to swallow.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens. For all you Wal-Mart die-hards, check out www.wakeupwalmart.com and read up on the truth.

Josh Bruns
