[AUG. 12, 2003]  MIDDLETOWN -- Kevin Becker of Williamsville will be guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Knapp/Chesnut/Becker Historical Society in Middletown at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The group will meet at the Knapp Library/Museum.

Becker will present a travelogue on Quebec, Canada.

"The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page." -- St. Augustine

Kevin is the son of Steve and Kerri Becker and is entering his sophomore year at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, where he is pursuing an international business major.

He is musically talented -- plays piano (studied with Helen Smith and George Eckland), tuba, organ and is learning banjo. He has played with the Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony for three years and was selected for the Illinois All-State Choir two years in a row.

During high school he participated in the Youth and Government program for three years and was elected chief justice of the Supreme Court in that program during his senior year.

On Wednesday at 2 p.m., Jessie Young of Mason City will share some of her poetry at the library.

Young is a published poet with poems printed regularly in the Banner Times of Mason City.

Poetry is the finest expression of language, requiring precision of word in evoking emotion and thought. Young’s poetry appeals to all, imprinting our common feelings and thoughts.

So, to all readers: Come, travel with us to Quebec on Tuesday evening and enjoy the language of poetry Wednesday afternoon at the Knapp Library/Museum in Middletown. All are most welcome.
