Performance center kicks off renovation start

BLOOMINGTON -- The Bloomington Center for the
Performing Arts will celebrate the start of renovations to the 83-year-old
theater with a public ceremony on March 1 at 2:30 p.m. on the stage of the
center, 110 E. Mulberry St.

The Illinois Wesleyan University Brass
Ensemble will open the celebration with a fanfare. The ceremony will
continue with speakers who will participate in a ceremonial removal
of theater seats to mark the beginning of the planned 16-month
renovation. Participating will be Bloomington Mayor Judy Markowitz,
Alderman Karen Schmidt, Henry Bird, Carol Struck and Dan Leifel,
chair of the Cultural District Commission.
The $11 million makeover of the Center
for the Performing Arts is scheduled to be completed in June 2006.
P.J. Hoerr Inc. of Normal will serve
as general contractor for the renovation, which was planned by
architects Hammond Beebe, Rupert and Ainge of Chicago with acoustic
consultants Jaffe Holden Inc. and theatrical consultants Schuler and
Shook.
