Mildred Morgenthau

[September 09, 2011]  LINCOLN -- Mildred L. Morgenthau, 90, of Lincoln, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at 12:30 p.m. at St. Clara's Manor.

Mrs. Morgenthau was cremated.

There will be a service at 1 p.m. Sept. 16 at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Mark Kaley officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

She was a buyer at Szolds Department Store from 1953-1960. She worked for Bergner's in Peoria from 1960-1969 and retired from that company, where she was the hosiery and accessory buyer for three stores.

She was born on Aug. 3, 1921, in Peoria. Her parents were Perry and Viola Banky Hawkins. She married Francis Burl Aten, and he preceded her in death in 1976. She later married Edwin F. Morgenthau, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 27, 1997.

She is survived by two daughters, Paula Sue Thompson of Rockford and Sarajane "Sallie" (and Bill) Marcotte of Lincoln; one stepson, Anthony (and Beth Ann) Morgenthau of Coral Gables, Fla.; four grandchildren, Staci (and Jim) Collins, Richard (and Jan) Marcotte, Lori (and Alan) Ruff and Kelli (and Tom) Pelzel; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lynn (and Kurt) Strauss of Tucson, Ariz.

Mildred was raised by her grandparents until she was 7 years old, when her grandmother died. Her grandfather was unable to care for her and placed her in Cunningham Children's Home in Urbana, where she lived until she was 14. She then moved to Peoria, where she lived with relatives and attended Woodruff High School.

Funeral Director

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lincoln.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to her church or to the Cunningham Children's Home in Urbana.
