Logan County 4-H members receive
achievement awards

[DEC. 3, 2003]  Logan County's annual 4-H Achievement Night was Nov. 6 at the Lincoln Park District Rec Center. Approximately 150 4-H members, leaders, and families came to congratulate the award recipients..

Winners of awards in the major categories were as follows:

One of the Logan County 4-H members was selected for the highest honor in a 4-H member's career. Because of her outstanding 4-H career and her excellent job with her 4-H records, Emily Bakken was chosen as Illinois delegate to the 2003 National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 28-Dec. 2.

The top 10 percent of records in a project area in the state are given a National 4-H Congress Blue Award Certificate each year. Local winners and their certificate categories:

Kyle Janssen, Middletown -- Achievement

Krista Ubbenga, Hartsburg -- Foods, Nutrition and Health

The "I Dare You" award is presented to 4-H'ers who have demonstrated qualities of leadership, excellence in character and effective future leadership. This year's winners were Susan Cochran, Mount Pulaski; Andrew Fulton, Lincoln; Michelle Johnson, Latham; Martin Oltmanns, Lincoln; and Rachael Tibbs, Middletown

The 4-H Key Award is the highest award given. To qualify, winners must be 16 years of age, have a minimum of three years of 4-H membership, submit a 4-H story and meet nine other requirements as verified by their leaders. This year's winners were Abrigail Sasse of Beason and Rachael Tibbs of Middletown.

Some 4-H'ers are chosen each year in special award categories. A book is presented to 4-H'ers with outstanding work, quantity, quality, years, citizenship, leadership, participation, skill acquisition and growth. The books are given in three age categories: 8-11 years of age, 12-14 years of age and 15-19 years of age. A Blue Award is given to 4-H'ers deserving of repeat recognition in a category. For the 15-19 category the medal awards are nationally sponsored and may be received only once in each curriculum area.

Club of the Year -- Middletown 4-H'ers. The Middletown 4-Hers have been very busy this year. They've had a community blood drive, trick-or-treating for canned goods, senior citizen luncheon and achievement day, safety day, drug dog presentation, May baskets, skating, bowling, family wiener roast and hayrack ride, donated Christmas presents to the Hope School for four children, Christmas caroling and donated cookies at St. Clara's, and a pizza Christmas party. They have had several fund-raisers, including a Pizza Hut fund-raiser, candle sales, bread sales and a club garage sale.

Twelve adult volunteers were recognized and honored in the following categories: first-year leaders -- Dara Baker, Darlene Carter, Craig Conrady, Mary Beth Hill, Dawn Phelps; fifth-year leaders -- Lisa Clark; 10th-year leaders -- Leonard Bakken, Rita Bakken, Sheila Davison, Mary Scanavino; leaders of the year -- Carlene Carter and Dana Oltmanns.
