The Illinois Housing Development Authority will lead the
state's housing policy creation, planning and implementation

[DEC. 11, 2003]  CHICAGO -- The newly created Affordable Housing Task Force will have its first meeting today (Dec. 11) to begin to create a comprehensive statewide affordable housing plan. An outline of the work, timetable, strategy and roles and responsibilities for the task force will be discussed to address the difficult questions of statewide affordable housing policy.

  • When: Thursday, Dec. 11, 1-3 p.m.
  • Where: Gleacher Center, Room 621, 450 N. Cityfront Plaza Drive, Chicago
  • What: First meeting of the governor's newly created Affordable Housing Task Force
  • Who: Thirty-five task force members, including elected officials, heads of Illinois departments, heads of housing authorities, housing advocates and other experts.

The most recent data shows over 40 percent of Illinois households are low-income, and more than 536,000 households (12.8 percent of the total in Illinois) are extremely low-income, earning below 30 percent of the median income, or less than $22,000 per year for a family of four. The need for safe decent and affordable housing for these populations is acute.

The task force is charged with creating a comprehensive housing plan that must be presented to the governor and the Illinois legislature at the end of each year. The executive director of the Illinois Housing Development Authority chairs the task force and will be responsible for coordinating the implementation of this plan.
