Wanna learn to cook coon?
Unique reading found in Knapp Library

[JUNE 28, 2003]  MIDDLETOWN -- Treats are in store for the area when the Knapp Library officially opens on Tuesday. High-quality books in the categories of education, entertainment and culture await curiosity-seekers and book lovers.

Commemorative bookmarks for the opening month feature these words of Thomas Jefferson to John Adams in 1815: "I cannot live without books!"

The library will offer diversified readings, ranging from music by Edward Grieg to recipes for cooking coon, from tips for hunters to ballet lessons for youth.

A special event called "Grandma Reads" is scheduled for July 12, with a session for 2- to 4-year-olds at 10 a.m. and another for 5- to 7-year-olds at 11 a.m.

Regular summer hours will be on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

Volunteers serving as head librarian are Marilyn Deters, Winnie Golden, Bill Post, Kathy Sommers, Jackie Sullivan and Jennifer Thomas.

With the opening of the Knapp Library, the Knapp/Chesnut/Becker Historical Society will have come a long way in achieving the four goals set with the Illinois secretary of state when the society was founded July 29, 1991, as a not-for-profit corporation:

[to top of second column in this article]

1. Restoration of an "architectural gem" (circa 1840).

2. Establishment of a public library and museum. (The Knapp Museum opened in the summer of 2002 for the Smithsonian exhibits "Yesterday's Tomorrows.")

3. Preservation of the precious historical heritage of the Middletown area.

4. Promotion of tourism to the area's historic sites.

Membership is $5 per year for adults and $1 per year for age 18 and under. Donations are tax-exempt. Monthly meetings are at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month.

Volunteers are welcome to help in the library or museum.

The historical society extends heartfelt gratitude to the many individuals, including the folks from San Jose, who have donated books to the library.
