SPECIAL EVENTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Illinois EPA announces spring household hazardous waste collection schedule

SPRINGFIELD -- The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency will sponsor 12 household hazardous waste collection events this spring, between April 12 and June 21. Collections in Springfield and Bloomington will be on May 3.

"This program continues to be an important service to Illinois citizens," said Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano. "Each year, the Illinois EPA coordinates these collections with local co-sponsors. Since they began 1989, 262,100 households have participated in 292 events, with 53,765 drums of material collected."

Local communities work with the Illinois EPA to give citizens the opportunity to rid their homes of unused or leftover household products that are potentially harmful.

Citizens may bring oil-based paints, thinners, chemical cleaners, antifreeze, motor oil, weed killers, insecticides and pesticides, and similar household products. Citizens are encouraged to find alternative uses for latex paint since it is not considered hazardous. Fluorescent and other high-intensity discharge lamps may also be brought to the collections. Items not accepted include auto batteries (which should be taken to local recyclers), explosives, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, agricultural chemicals and all business wastes.

An Illinois EPA contractor disposes of the wastes in an environmentally friendly manner. The events are free to the public and are paid for by a portion of the statewide fees on solid waste taken to landfills.

Logan County is on the waiting list to host a collection in the future. However, if residents wish to take to their waste products to one of the currently scheduled sites, they may. One-day collections are open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Saturdays listed below.

Military blood supplies are adequate at this time

America's Blood Centers, a network of community blood centers that collects nearly half of the nation's blood supply, has signed an agreement with the United States Department of Defense to supplement the military's blood supply during wartime, if and when additional blood is needed. While the military collects its own blood and relies foremost on that blood for its troops, America's Blood Centers' members, including Central Illinois Community Blood Center, will be called upon to support that supply when requested by the Department of Defense. However, at this time, the department has not requested additional support from any blood-collecting organization.

Once the military requests blood from America's Blood Centers' national office in Washington, pre-assigned member "hub centers" will be alerted and will send blood to a designated military location. Other support centers will ship replacement blood to the hubs in readiness for further requests for blood. America's Blood Centers and its participating members will use its best efforts to ensure that the military's needs are fulfilled by recruiting people to donate not only for their local communities, which always need blood, but also for the men and women who are serving our country.

"At this time, blood levels across the country are very low, and we need more donors to come in regularly. Unfortunately, we don't know when the military may call upon community blood centers or the Red Cross to help support their supply. Blood is needed every day -- not just in times of disaster or military action. It is imperative that we make certain that blood is on the shelves at all times so we're prepared for anything. It is the blood on the shelf that saves lives," said David Parsons, CEO of Central Illinois Community Blood Center.

Locally, Central Illinois Community Blood Center, a member of America's Blood Centers, encourages donors to continue to donate regularly and asks healthy community members who are not active blood donors to join in this lifesaving effort. "We are confident that, should the need arise, central Illinois residents will rise to the challenge and support not only the blood center, but their country," said David Parsons, CEO.

Logan County community members will have an opportunity to help support this effort at a blood drive at the Logan County Paramedic Association building (old Glenn Pontiac Building) on Monday, April 7, from noon until 6 p.m. Blood collected at this blood drive through Central Illinois Community Blood Center will help local patients and, if requested by the military, will also be used to help support the war effort.

Lincoln Rotary Club looks for host families

The Lincoln Rotary Club is currently looking for four host families for next school year, beginning this August. Rotary hopes to bring an international or foreign exchange male student into our community for the year, with the student scheduled to return home in July 2004.

Each host family will have the responsibility of housing the student for only three months. In this way, four families will get to experience a life from another culture, and the student will get a slice of Americana from the perspective of four different family experiences.

If you are interested in participating in this program, please call Bob Jeckel at 735-5372 or Lynn Laughlin at 735-1793.

Landfill open extended hours

Relay For Life, a team event to fight cancer

Logan County will host the sixth annual Relay For Life at the Laughlin Center at Lincoln Christian College and Seminary on May 9 and 10. The Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature event. It is truly a celebration of cancer survivorship and an outstanding way to honor those who have triumphed over cancer and to remember those we have lost to the disease.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Illinois. In 2003 it is expected that 57,160 Illinoisans will be diagnosed with cases of cancer. This is equivalent to 157 new cases every day and almost seven new cases every hour. Approximately 25,610 Illinoisans will die of cancer this year, about 70 people a day.

There are about eight million people alive today who have had some type of cancer. Every year more and more people survive cancer. This is especially true of children with cancer because of the new treatments and technology.

Last year the Relay For Life raised over $14,000,000 in Illinois. Of this amount, 60 percent stayed in our state.

By forming a team from your company, church, school, neighborhood or other group, you will not only be part of a great community event, but you will raise funds to improve the quality of life for cancer patients today and the outlook for those diagnosed in the future. We hope to raise $65,000 from this year's event. To reach our goal, we need your support!

This year's festivities officially begin at 8 p.m. Friday and conclude Saturday at noon. The overnight fund-raiser helps to support the organization's programs of cancer research, education, patient services and advocacy.

This year's gold sponsors for the event are CEFCU, Family Medical Center, Lincolnland Communication/Cingular, Wal-Mart, and Lincoln Christian College and Seminary.

Local co-chairs are Mary Ellen Martin and Kathy Blaum.

If you are interested in learning more about this important event, please call 732-9372, 732-3349 or
1 (800) 252-5302.

Golden wedding anniversary

[MARCH. 22, 2003]  Mr. and Mrs. Robert Higgins of Chestnut will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary April 19 with a family get-together at the Sunset Inn and Suites in Clinton. Robert Higgins and Bernadine Ater were married April 14, 1953, at the Presbyterian Church in Argenta.

In their early years of marriage, Robert was a farmer and Bernadine was a cosmetologist. Robert later managed an auto supply store in Iowa and then worked several years for Bo-Jac Seed Company. Bernadine ran an in-home day-care business and later worked with her husband in the auto supply business.

The snowbirds are now retired, and for the past few years they have wintered in Arizona.

Robert and Bernadine have four children: Mike and his wife, Anne, of Kenney; Jeff and his wife, Debbie, in Manlius; Debbie and her husband, John, in Palmyra, Mo.; and Connie and her husband, John, in Stillwater, Okla. They have seven grandchildren.

Team up with friends for MS Walk

[MARCH. 4, 2003]  Helping improve the lives of a third of a million Americans is a big job, but it's not overwhelming with a little help from your friends. Bring a group of friends or family members and join other teams on Sunday, April 6, for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society's 2003 MS Walk. Chat with your team as you walk down the 1½-mile course through Kickapoo Creek Park and toward a cure for MS. The walk begins at 1:30 p.m.

Teams of walkers collect contributions for completing the course. The money raised from the MS Walk helps the society continue to lead the way in MS programs, research and professional education.

"I always have fun walking for the National MS Society," said Donita Biggs of Lincoln. "I always meet new people and get to see some of my old friends while I walk. Although I have so much fun, I am really here to help the third of a million Americans living with MS. It's the least I can do."

The National MS Society is dedicated to ending the devastating effects of MS. Thanks to significant advances in research, the FDA has approved several treatments that may alter the underlying course of MS, and early treatment is critically important. People with MS should consult their doctors about using one of the FDA-approved medications and other effective treatments for the symptoms of MS.

[to top of second column in this article]

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is the only national voluntary MS organization that meets the standards of all major agencies that rate the fiscal responsibility of nonprofit groups

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, unpredictable neurological disease. MS can cause blurred vision, loss of balance, poor coordination, slurred speech, tremors, numbness, extreme fatigue, problems with memory and concentration, paralysis, and blindness. These problems may be permanent, or they may come and go.

For more information about MS, the MS Walk, or to walk, volunteer or sponsor someone in the MS Walk, please call Nancy Ireland at 732-2339 or the National MS Society at 1 (800) FIGHT MS, or visit nationalmssociety.org.

Family and Friends in the Armed Forces

sponsored by American Legion Post 263

It is a time like no other. Since Sept. 11, 2001, we are a changed nation. Individually, our daily sensitivity toward whom and what we have in our lives has been heightened. We are more conscious and appreciative, first about those we love and see every day. Next, we have a newfound appreciation for those who risk their lives every day as rescue workers and protectors of life and property in our communities. We also now think more about our military men and women who are committed to serve and protect our country. Many are away engaged in battle, some are in waiting to go, all are ready to lay their lives on the line in defense of our freedom.

Friends and relatives serving in the armed forces are listed here so we might all hold them in our thoughts, prayers and well wishes. If you know of other friends and relatives serving (they need not be from Logan County), please send the information to ldneditor@lincolndailynews.com. Along with the name, you are invited to include the branch of service, current location of service, postal address, e-mail address and relationship to the person providing the information (optional).
