[APRIL 27, 2005]  LEWISTOWN -- Children ages 7-12 are invited to register for a workshop at Dickson Mounds Museum that will allow them to step back in time and experience a day in a 19th-century school. The workshop will be on May 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the museum's replica of an 1839 one-room schoolhouse.

"Education is an important part of our mission at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources," said IDNR Director Joel Brunsvold. "Getting an education on how education happened in the ‘old days’ is a great way to meet our mission -- plus, everyone involved has a good time."

A "schoolmarm" dressed in period clothing will teach historically accurate lessons and games. Activities include reading lessons from McGuffy's Readers, penmanship practice, a spelling bee and old-fashioned recess games such as "Simon Says" and "Red Rover."

Participants are invited to dress in old-fashioned clothing and should bring a sack lunch. Cost is $10 per child, and advance registration is required. To register, please call (309) 547-3721.
