[FEB. 17, 2005]  BLOOMINGTON -- The Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts will celebrate the start of renovations to the 83-year-old theater with a public ceremony on March 1 at 2:30 p.m. on the stage of the center, 110 E. Mulberry St.

The Illinois Wesleyan University Brass Ensemble will open the celebration with a fanfare. The ceremony will continue with speakers who will participate in a ceremonial removal of theater seats to mark the beginning of the planned 16-month renovation. Participating will be Bloomington Mayor Judy Markowitz, Alderman Karen Schmidt, Henry Bird, Carol Struck and Dan Leifel, chair of the Cultural District Commission.

The $11 million makeover of the Center for the Performing Arts is scheduled to be completed in June 2006.

P.J. Hoerr Inc. of Normal will serve as general contractor for the renovation, which was planned by architects Hammond Beebe, Rupert and Ainge of Chicago with acoustic consultants Jaffe Holden Inc. and theatrical consultants Schuler and Shook.
