On New Year's Eve, the community of Mount Pulaski gathered at the steps of the courthouse in a special remembrance service for those who died in 2013.  With approximately 50 present, retired Pastor Barbara Stroud-Borth, a Mount Pulaski Courthouse Foundation member, recited "For Whom the Bell Tolls." Tom Martin, chairman of the foundation, read the names of the deceased, while Melody Williams rang the bell on the courthouse lawn once for each name.

On Dec. 24, Mary Dowdel assumed the position of manager of the Humane Society of Logan County Shelter. She has been a dedicated volunteer at the shelter for the last two years and served a year as a member of the HSLC board of directors.

Dowdel had a career with GTE, raised five children and now has turned her sights on helping pets in Logan County find forever homes.

She has two cats at home but does like dogs too. She said she is always on the go, so cats made more sense than dogs that need more daily attention than a cat does.

She feels the biggest challenge in running the shelter will be to coordinate the many volunteers who work at the shelter, to make sure tasks are always covered. If you are interested in volunteering at the shelter, please give her a call at 217-737-4042 and she will sign you up.
