SPECIAL EVENTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Relay For Life, a team event to fight cancer

Logan County will host the sixth annual Relay For Life at the Laughlin Center at Lincoln Christian College and Seminary on May 9 and 10. The Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature event. It is truly a celebration of cancer survivorship and an outstanding way to honor those who have triumphed over cancer and to remember those we have lost to the disease.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Illinois. In 2003 it is expected that 57,160 Illinoisans will be diagnosed with cases of cancer. This is equivalent to 157 new cases every day and almost seven new cases every hour. Approximately 25,610 Illinoisans will die of cancer this year, about 70 people a day.

There are about eight million people alive today who have had some type of cancer. Every year more and more people survive cancer. This is especially true of children with cancer because of the new treatments and technology.

Last year the Relay For Life raised over $14,000,000 in Illinois. Of this amount, 60 percent stayed in our state.

By forming a team from your company, church, school, neighborhood or other group, you will not only be part of a great community event, but you will raise funds to improve the quality of life for cancer patients today and the outlook for those diagnosed in the future. We hope to raise $65,000 from this year’s event. To reach our goal, we need your support!

This year’s festivities officially begin at 8 p.m. Friday and conclude Saturday at noon. The overnight fund-raiser helps to support the organization’s programs of cancer research, education, patient services and advocacy.

This year’s gold sponsors for the event are CEFCU, Family Medical Center, Lincolnland Communication/Cingular, Wal-Mart, and Lincoln Christian College and Seminary.

Local co-chairs are Mary Ellen Martin and Kathy Blaum.

If you are interested in learning more about this important event, please call 732-9372, 732-3349 or
1 (800) 252-5302.

For more information on the Web, go to http://www.cancer.org/docroot/gi/gi_1.asp.

Donate blood Monday

Patients in our local hospitals depend on healthy community members to supply the blood they desperately need to stay alive. Blood is a renewable resource. Every three seconds someone needs a blood transfusion of some kind. To accommodate this constant usage, community members must continually help replenish this supply. Since a donor can only donate whole blood every 56 days, Central Illinois Community Blood Center needs community members to come forward and help with this lifesaving effort.

Central Illinois Community Blood Center provides all of the blood and blood products for 12 area hospitals, including those in Lincoln, Hopedale and Springfield. CICBC is a community-based blood center whose mission is to provide a safe and adequate blood supply for patients in local hospitals in a cost-effective manner. No other organization provides blood in these hospitals.

When you donate blood through CICBC, you help to keep a safe and adequate blood supply for your community. You also help keep local medical costs under control. When you donate your blood to an organization that takes it out of the community, it can jeopardize local lives and raise local medical costs.

Please help by donating blood on Monday, March 3, between noon and 6 p.m. at the Logan County Paramedics Association building, 1300 N. Postville Road. CICBC will also bring information on platelet apheresis. If there is enough interest, CICBC will bring apheresis machines to Lincoln.

CICBC also provides therapeutic phlebotomy at no charge for community members with hereditary hemochromatosis. Anyone needing this service should call ahead for an appointment. Please call Debbie Mast at 753-1530. This procedure can be performed at the blood drive.

For more information on the blood drive, call Terry Bell at 753-1530.

Boy Scout chili and vegetable soup supper Friday

Boy Scout Troop 102 is having a chili and vegetable soup supper on Friday, Feb. 28. Hot dogs will also be available. The all-you-can-eat supper will be served from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Lincoln.

The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12.

Please support our Boy Scouts.

Free bowling and meet the Lady Railers party

The LCHS girls junior varsity and varsity basketball teams along with the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs Task Force invite you to a free afternoon of bowling.

The event will be at Logan Lanes from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 2. There will be free food, soft drinks and educational materials.

Come out and meet the Lady Railers!

Parents and teachers, new website
helps explain terrorism to kids

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has just posted a section titled "National Security Emergencies" on "FEMA for Kids." The new section helps explain terrorism, biological and chemical weapons and how to prepare for these threats. In light of the newly elevated threat level, this site is even more important. Go to http://www.fema.gov/kids/nse/.

Library hosts children's programs

Lincoln Public Library began its winter and spring programming schedule on Feb. 3. The library offers a story time for preschool-age children on Monday mornings at 10, Monday evenings at 6 and Tuesday mornings at 10. Also on Tuesday mornings is a lap-sit story time for infants to 2 years old.

There are two special book clubs for children in third grade to sixth grade. The first Tuesday night of each month at 6 is an American Girl Book Discussion Group. The second Tuesday night of each month at 6 is a Special Investigators Book Club. These clubs will meet in February, March and April.

Craft times for children in first grade to sixth grade have taken on a new look. The library will offer several craft times each month on the days that school is off or the children get out early. Please come by the library and pick up a schedule of these events.

The Student-Saver Homework Center continues to be open Monday through Thursday from 3:15 to 5 p.m. For more details, brochures are available at the library.

Please visit the library at 725 Pekin St. or call (217) 732-5732 to register for these programs.

People all across this country and, in fact, around the world, claim roots in Logan County. They have very interesting stories to tell, and some of them like to connect with those of us who stayed at home. Logan County Diaspora publishes the stories of former Logan County residents. With their permission, we also include their e-mail addresses so that old friends might be reunited. If you wish to be part of the Logan County Diaspora, e-mail ldneditor@lincolndailynews.com.

Family and Friends in the Armed Forces

It is a time like no other. Since Sept. 11, 2001, we are a changed nation. Individually, our daily sensitivity toward whom and what we have in our lives has been heightened. We are more conscious and appreciative, first about those we love and see every day. Next, we have a newfound appreciation for those who risk their lives every day as rescue workers and protectors of life and property in our communities. We also now think more about our military men and women who are committed to serve and protect our country. Many are away engaged in battle, some are in waiting to go, all are ready to lay their lives on the line in defense of our freedom.

Friends and relatives serving in the armed forces are listed here so we might all hold them in our thoughts, prayers and well wishes. If you know of other friends and relatives serving (they need not be from Logan County), please send the information to ldneditor@lincolndailynews.com. Along with the name, you are invited to include the branch of service, current location of service, postal address, e-mail address and relationship to the person providing the information (optional).
