[OCT. 2, 2003]  The Logan County Joint Solid Waste Agency has hired a new coordinator, Mitzi Rohlfs, to coordinate solid waste management activities for the county. Rohlfs replaces Kenneth Schwab, who served as coordinator since 1997. Under Schwab's direction, the agency initiated and established the county's current recycling program.

The goal of the Logan County Joint Solid Waste Agency is to reduce the amount of solid waste entering area landfills and to encourage individuals, businesses and governmental entities to recycle. The Logan County Joint Solid Waste Agency was established in 1997 in response to state mandates outlined in the Solid Waste Planning and Recycling Act, requiring all Illinois counties to develop a comprehensive solid waste management plan.

Logan County addressed the mandates of the act by implementing a residential curbside recycling program in Lincoln and placing recycling drop-off bins throughout Logan County for the collection of recyclable materials. Additionally, the Logan County Joint Solid Waste Agency works with area schools, businesses and governmental agencies to educate and promote the collection and use of recyclable materials.

The Logan County Solid Waste Agency is administered by a board of directors. The board consists of a representative for each incorporated municipality in the county, while the remaining unincorporated areas of the county are represented by an appointed member of the Logan County Board.

Alternates to the board are Pat O'Neill, Logan County Board; Grant Eaton, Lincoln; John Bates Jr., Mount Pulaski; Bill Martin Jr., Atlanta; and Joe Hackett, Emden.

The board of the Logan County Joint Solid Waste Agency meets the third Wednesday of each month, with the exception of December and August, at 7 p.m. at the Logan County Courthouse. Meetings are open to the public.
