[SEPT. 25, 2003]  URBANA -- As the leaves begin to turn and autumn arrives, thoughts move to some of the season's traditions -- apples, pumpkins and foliage. Information about all three can be found on University of Illinois Extension's Urban Programs Resource Network.

The sites are "Apples & More," "Pumpkins & More" and "The Miracle of Fall." All are in the "Hort Corner" section of the urban programs main page at http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/.

"These three sites are quite popular this time of the year as families prepare to get a Halloween pumpkin or look forward to fresh apples," said Jane Scherer, U of I Extension urban programs specialist. "And the site on fall foliage is a 'must' for those looking for the best views in the Midwest."

"The 'Apples & More' site has information about apple varieties, nutrition, recipes, apple cider, apple orchards and apple festivals," said Scherer. "The location of area pumpkin farms along with information about nutrition, recipes, and the selection and use of pumpkins are all available on 'Pumpkins & More.'"

Recently, the New York Times newspaper named "The Miracle of Fall" as one of the top websites for information about fall color.

"The site has regular updates on foliage -- where the leaves are turning or are expected to turn," said Scherer. "It features a live foliage camera so you can actually see what the fall colors look like in a given area.

"Festival and events connected with fall foliage are noted. There are also links to various tours and fall foliage events in several states."
