Kittrell's ACL strained, not torn     Send a link to a friend

[OCT. 9, 2003]  NORMAL -- Head coach Denver Johnson and the Illinois State football team got some good news on Wednesday when the magnetic resonance imaging report showed that freshman defensive back Leon Kittrell suffered only a strained the anterior cruciate ligament to his right knee.

"We are relieved for Leon that he won't have to go through reconstructive surgery on his knee," Johnson said. "He's still going to miss a couple of games, but we are being told that he should be back for the end of the season."

Kittrell injured his knee in the 16-7 loss to No. 15 Northern Iowa at Hancock Stadium on Saturday. He will likely miss two weeks and could be back for the Redbirds' game at Youngstown State.

Kittrell played in all six games and started the first three for the 'Birds at cornerback. He has eight tackles on the season, with two tackles for loss and a pair of pass breakups. Kittrell recovered a fumble Saturday against UNI prior to the injury.
