2016 LOGAN COUNTY FAIR

LINCOLN DAILY NEWS July 29 - August 6, 2016

Some like it hot, some not; chili to everyone’s liking

Brad Aper Tribute Team takes two awards

Whether you like your chili hot, mild, or somewhere in

between, the annual chili cook-off at the Logan County Fair

is the place to be. Bringing out competitors from around the

county, it is a good place to try several tasty chili recipes.

This year’s cook-off had eleven teams. In addition to a

few veteran teams for whom the cook-off is part of Fair

tradition, the competition added a few newcomers. And,

as usual, a lot of friendly bantering and joking went on

between rival teams.

Carter’s Farm Team with David Carter and Ethan Bertram

was in the competition for the first time. Carter has been

in other cooking contests, so he decided to enter the chili

cook-off. Carter and Bertram said it is “chili like your mama

makes,” and is “not super spicy or exotic, just solid with no frills.” The boys use just basic spices.

Dan Benedict was another first year entrant,

and he just decided on Friday night he would

participate in the cook-off. Benedict said, “I

use ground beef, pork, and turkey to make

my chili special.” He said the chili’s spiciness “is

about medium,” and “I add a special sauce

to give it a kick.”

John Cook also participated for the first time. Cook

said, “I use a blend of ingredients to make the

chili have a little bit of a bite to it.” He said, “I use

ground beef, beans, tomatoes, and a few spices.”
