[DEC. 2, 2003]  NORMAL -- Illinois State head football coach Denver Johnson announced Monday that assistant coach Jon Shields' contract will not be renewed on Dec. 31 for the 2004 season.

"I appreciate everything that Jon has done for the Redbird football program," said Johnson. "He has been a great asset and loyal ambassador to the program for the last four years. I know that he will be successful in whatever endeavor he undertakes."

Shields spent four seasons on the Redbird coaching staff. During his tenure, Shields spent three seasons coaching the outside linebacker position and in 2002 was coach for the wide receivers. Shields came to Illinois State in 2000 after spending one season as a graduate assistant at Duke.
