Illinois basketball parking update     Send a link to a friend

[NOV. 26, 2003]  CHAMPAIGN -- University of Illinois men's basketball fans should be aware of some changes in parking near the Assembly Hall for games in 2003-04.

The four quadrant lots around the Assembly Hall have been completely assigned to I-Fund members, media and staff and, except for handicapped parking, are not available for day-of-game purchase.

The E-14 Lot, located directly across First Street west of the Assembly Hall, has also been sold out, with I-Fund donor passes and public season parking passes purchased by season ticket holders. More than 50 percent of the lot is assigned to faculty, staff and students on a permanent basis and is not available for basketball parking. I-Fund donors who are season ticket holders receive a complimentary parking pass as a benefit to their donation. Season ticket buyers have the option to purchase season parking passes from the Assembly Hall until they are sold out.

Day-of-game parking patrons may purchase parking for $5 at the UI Research Park, located south of St. Mary's Road and west of First Street. Signage will assist in directing fans to the lots. Best access to single-game parking in the Research Park is from the west on St. Mary's Road and from the south on First Street. Nearly 2,000 parking spots are available in the UI Research Park and almost half are paved. This parking area is within 500 yards of the Assembly Hall.

New day-of-game parking is now available in the E-44 grass lot, located at the southeast corner of Kirby Avenue and Fourth Street. Entrance to the lot is from the east and west on Kirby Avenue near Illinois Field.

Additional portable lighting and more traffic control officers have been added around the UI Research Park to help patrons in and out of the parking lots.

Beginning approximately one hour prior to games, First Street will be closed at the Assembly Hall circle drive to allow for pedestrian traffic. Drivers in the area should plan an alternative route to avoid the road closure. The Assembly Hall will no longer back-fill the surrounding parking lots beginning 15 minutes prior to tipoff.

Fans should also be aware that several establishments in Champaign-Urbana provide shuttle buses to and from the games.

When coming to games, fans should allow time to park, walk and pass through security checks at the door before the beginning of the game.
