Land of Lincoln United Cerebral Palsy is hosting a free play group for children with disabilities. The theme is "Down on the Farm," and the event is from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 21 at 101 N. 16th St. in Springfield.

The play group is offered to families of children up to age 5 who have disabilities. The group is free to attendees and will include crafts, games, snack, stories and much, much more. The activities will be adapted to fit the needs of children with disabilities.

While their children have the opportunity to learn and participate in peer socialization, parents stay to observe and discuss child-centered topics.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has just posted a section titled "National Security Emergencies" on "FEMA for Kids." The new section helps explain terrorism, biological and chemical weapons and how to prepare for these threats. In light of the newly elevated threat level, this site is even more important. Library hosts children's programs

Lincoln Public Library began its winter and spring programming schedule on Feb. 3. The library offers a story time for preschool-age children on Monday mornings at 10, Monday evenings at 6 and Tuesday mornings at 10. Also on Tuesday mornings is a lap-sit story time for infants to 2 years old.

There are two special book clubs for children in third grade to sixth grade. The first Tuesday night of each month at 6 is an American Girl Book Discussion Group. The second Tuesday night of each month at 6 is a Special Investigators Book Club. These clubs will meet in February, March and April.

Craft times for children in first grade to sixth grade have taken on a new look. The library will offer several craft times each month on the days that school is off or the children get out early. Please come by the library and pick up a schedule of these events.

The Student-Saver Homework Center continues to be open Monday through Thursday from 3:15 to 5 p.m. For more details, brochures are available at the library.

The Oasis, Logan County's senior citizen center, 501 Pulaski St. in Lincoln, is open weekdays (except holidays) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The center is open also on Friday and Sunday nights for table games. Dominic Dalpoas is the executive director. Activities are open to all Logan County senior citizens, regardless of membership..

The regular monthly meeting of the Alzheimer support group is scheduled for Thursday at 1 p.m. Please tell friends and family members who might need to talk with others and a trained facilitator. No appointment is necessary.

Bingo games also start at 1 p.m. Thursday and are sponsored this week by the Extension service. The special prizes are nutritious foods.

The representative for veterans assistance will be at The Oasis on Tuesday, Feb. 25, from 9 a.m. until noon ONLY. The limited service is available the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month until staffing requirements are filled.

Deidre Berger, R.N., of the Logan County Health Department will be the featured speaker at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26. Please join us for the presentation and discussion.

There are still a few seats available for "Dedicated to the End" at Barn II, Goodfield. The cost of $35 for members and $37 for nonmembers includes transportation, meal and show ticket. Call 732-6132 for a reservation.

Join the fun-loving group for pinochle, pool and Rummikub each Friday and Sunday from 6 to 10 p.m.

Recent game winners were Les Van Bibber for pinochle and Louise Wiebers for Rummikub. Tom Garrison and Bernie Haley won at weekday pinochle.

It's a girl!

[FEB. 5, 2003]  Katie Arcenith Marie Fritz was born at 10:10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria. She was 7 pounds, 9 ounces and 20½ inches long at birth. Her parents are Wendy and Jared Fritz of Pekin.

Katie's proud grandparents are Bob and Cheryl Frank of Lincoln. Bob is our wonderful photographer here at Lincoln Daily News.

Next family for new Habitat home announced

[JAN. 11, 2003]  The Habitat for Humanity of Logan County selection committee has just announced that the Christopher and Jackie Hagan family of Mount Pulaski has been selected as the recipient of the next new house.

The city of Mount Pulaski donated the parcel of land for the new home to the local organization. The groundbreaking and dedication is unscheduled but will occur in February.

The Logan County Habitat chapter is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2003. The anniversary will be kicked off with the pouring of the foundation for the Hagan house, which is tentatively scheduled for the later part of March. It is the seventh house to be built by the local chapter.

Habitat's second annual Snowflake Ball will be on Feb. 1 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Lincoln. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m., followed by music by The Nostalgics from 7 until 10 p.m. The Nostalgics perform tunes from the '40s and '50s for fun dancing.

Local businesses Mitchell-Newhouse Lumber, The Carpet House and Lincoln IGA will be recognized at the dinner and dance for their continued support of Habitat for Humanity.

Family and Friends in the Armed Forces

It is a time like no other. Since Sept. 11, 2001, we are a changed nation. Individually, our daily sensitivity toward whom and what we have in our lives has been heightened. We are more conscious and appreciative, first about those we love and see every day. Next, we have a newfound appreciation for those who risk their lives every day as rescue workers and protectors of life and property in our communities. We also now think more about our military men and women who are committed to serve and protect our country. Many are away engaged in battle, some are in waiting to go, all are ready to lay their lives on the line in defense of our freedom.
