National tournament in Lincoln    Send a link to a friend

[NOV. 7, 2003]  We don't know how long it's been since a national tournament of any kind was hosted in Lincoln. We don't even know IF a national tourney of any kind has even been held here. We do know that the National Christian College Athletic Association is hosting their volleyball national tournament in Lincoln. The tourney got under way Thursday and will continue for the next two days at the beautiful new Laughlin Center on the Lincoln Christian College campus.

A crowd of roughly 200, including the members of the 10 teams competing in this 2003 event, attended a banquet in their honor Wednesday evening. The banquet was in a candlelit edition of Henderson Hall on LCC's campus. The coaches, players, families and dignitaries were treated to a wonderful dinner and saw some trophies and awards passed out.

The banquet featured a stirring talk delivered by perhaps the greatest athlete in central Illinois, Miss Jean Driscoll. Driscoll is an eight-time winner of the Boston Marathon, a two-time silver medalist at the Olympics and the holder of countless other world records and awards. Though highly accomplished in her field of sports, that is nothing compared to her testimony!

Games start at 10 a.m. and then go every two hours Friday. The semifinals will be Saturday morning, and the national championship game is set for Saturday afternoon. There are STILL a few great seats available for this family fun fest. Call 732-3168 for tickets or pick them up at the box office. A great crowd from the community would make a favorable impression on 10 teams visiting Lincoln from all over the country.
