Turkey supper in Middletown
on Saturday
MIDDLETOWN — The public is
invited to the annual "all you can eat" turkey supper sponsored in
Middletown by the Knapp/Chesnut/Becker Historical Society. The
benefit this year will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at the
New Holland-Middletown Middle School. On the menu are turkey and
dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, cranberries,
rolls, choices of salads, pie, cake, and beverages.
Special historical displays will
feature a look back at the "Yesterday’s Tomorrows" Smithsonian
exhibits in Middletown this summer, quilts, photo albums, history
fair entries, laminated newspapers, and four scrapbooks, formerly in
the safekeeping of Mrs. Tibb Steinhour, that were donated in June by
her granddaughter, Sandy Ackley Wendt of Lincoln. Kathy Sommers and
Jackie Sullivan are co-chairs for these exhibits.
Eddie and Dorothy Allison Dirks of
Athens will answer queries concerning genealogy, family and
Middletown history. Eddie is the Menard County historian.
Phyllis and Bill Bryson of Mount
Pulaski will bring Indian artifacts and special porcelain mugs
called family tree mugs, which Phyllis creates. In addition, the
Brysons and other members of the Logan County Genealogical and
Historical Society are seeking information about war veterans for
inclusion in a book soon to be published. The deadline for
submissions is December.
Donations for the turkey supper benefit
are $6 for adults and youth 10 years and older, $3 for ages 4 to 9,
and free for those younger. Donations will also be accepted for a
50-50 drawing. Winners need not be present for the drawing, which
will be after the supper.
Proceeds will be used for educational
needs at the Knapp Library and Museum, such as filing cabinets and
storage units for maps, drawings, newspapers and videos.
The K/C/B
Society appreciates all of the books being donated by individuals,
as well as the books and bookcases donated by the village of San
Jose. The space that was used by the Smithsonian exhibits is being
readied so that the Knapp Library can open as soon as possible.
Meeting program on milk stool collection
The Logan County Genealogical and
Historical Society will have its October meeting on the 21st at 6:30
p.m. at 114 N. Chicago St. The milk stool lady, Jean Mehl, will
present the program. She has been collecting milk stools since 1980,
and the oldest one in her possession dates back to 1862.
Members are
encouraged to attend, and visitors are welcome. Roseann Coers will
be hostess.

Kiwanis speaker, Jack Burke, reviews
Heritage In Flight Museum history
Jack Burke, president of
Heritage In Flight, was the guest speaker at the Aug. 20 monthly meeting
of the Lincoln Kiwanis club. Burke told the audience about how, why and
when Heritage In Flight
started. He showed slides of the various HIF projects, from the building
of the museum to the acquisition of the static display aircraft. He
talked about how the many displays were collected and HIF’s good fortune
in having Myers Industries supply the lighted display cases. The
audience asked questions, mostly about how the donated items are
displayed and if there is room for more donations.
If you would like to have Burke make a
presentation on Heritage In Flight at your service club meeting, just
call the museum, (217) 732-3333.
Lincoln Junior Woman’s Club
celebrating Junior Week with projects
The Lincoln Junior
Woman’s Club is one of the 103 Junior Clubs of the GFWC Illinois Junior
Organization, which promotes community service and volunteerism for the
women of our community. The GFWC Illinois Junior Organization has
planned a "GFWC Illinois Junior Week" Oct. 13-19 to call attention to
the many accomplishments of the Federated Junior Woman’s Clubs.
The Lincoln Junior
Woman’s Club will celebrate Illinois Junior Week by doing several
projects, such as painting pumpkins and donating them to our local
nursing homes; collecting pre-1940s household elements to be donated to
the Architectural Salvage Warehouse; providing healthy snacks to
teachers at our local schools; donating proceeds to ALMH for the breast
cancer chapter; providing the first baby born at ALMH during our Junior
Week a basket full of baby items; purchasing small livestock for a
family of a Third World country; and donating smoke detectors to CIEDC.
Junior Week is a few short days, but we have several projects planned
for the coming 2002-2003 year.
We also have a window
display in the Griesheim building, showing some of the projects that we
will be doing during the year.
As president of the
Lincoln Junior Woman’s Club, I would like to take this opportunity to
thank the community for its continual support of our efforts.
Sincerely,
Angela Getchel
President
Lincoln Junior Woman’s Club

Memorial wreath and plaque honor firefighters, police
[OCT. 4, 2002]
On Sept. 11, 2002, State
Farm agent Chris Coyne and one of his staff members, Georgia Isaac,
presented a wreath to be displayed at the Logan County Courthouse as
a memorial to the fallen firefighters and police officers who lost
their lives in the terrorist acts on Sept. 11, 2001, in New York
City.
|
Logan County Board Chairman Dick
Logan, Sheriff Tony Soloman and Lincoln Rural Fire Department
representatives Capt. Dean Kukuck and Chief Robert Thomas were on
hand to accept the memorial on behalf of Logan County firefighters
and law enforcement.
Vicki
Purcell from The Awards Shop in Lincoln donated the plaque, which
reads, "To Honor the Brave Fire and Police." Georgia Isaac designed
the red, white and blue wreath.

Family
and Friends in the Armed Forces
|
It
is a time like no other. Since Sept. 11 we are a changed
nation. Individually, our daily sensitivity toward whom and what we have
in our lives has been heightened. We are more conscious and
appreciative, first about those we love and see every day.
Next, we have a newfound appreciation for those who risk their
lives every day as rescue workers and protectors of life and
property in our communities. We also now think more about our
military men and women who are committed to serve and protect
our country. Many are away engaged in battle, some are in
waiting to go, all are ready to lay their lives on the line in
defense of our freedom.
Friends
and relatives serving in the armed forces are listed here so we might all hold them in our thoughts, prayers and well
wishes. If you know of other friends and relatives serving (they
need not be from Logan County),
please send the information to ldneditor@lincolndailynews.com. Along with the name, you are invited to include the branch of
service, current location of service, postal address, e-mail
address and relationship to the person providing the information (optional).
