This weekend there was certainly a lot going on in Logan County, with special events both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday our two historic courthouses celebrated the 205th birthday of Abraham Lincoln. On Sunday the Logan County  4-H Foundation offered an excellent spaghetti meal, and the Lincoln Park District hosted a Sweetheart Dance. LDN will bring you photos from the spaghetti dinner and Sweetheart Dance today and complete coverage of the courthouse celebrations on Tuesday.

Saturday, Barbara Stroud-Borth took on the persona of Sarah Wakefield, a white woman who was taken hostage by members of the Dakota Indian tribe in the 1860s and held for six weeks. The conflict between whites and American Indians was an ongoing issue during the Civil War. While many of us think of the war as being our 16th president's only issue, the fact is that Abraham Lincoln dealt with many other issues and conflicts while he was president. In the conflict with the Dakota, he pardoned 300 Indian prisoners, saving them from execution.  However, the one Indian who saved Wakefield's life during her time as hostage was hanged. Stroud-Borth told Wakefield's story at both the Mount Pulaski and Postville courthouses on Saturday as a part of the annual celebration of Lincoln's birthday. LDN will have complete coverage of the events in the Tuesday edition.

So, what happened to our snow pile over the weekend? Not much. On Saturday the most notable issue was the lack of sunshine on the snow, making the details of the pile a little less discernible. During the nighttime hours on Saturday, Mother Nature paid another visit. The overnight snow was light, but it did add a thin coat on top of our pile. On Sunday, though, the sun was back out again, but the temperatures were still in the teens, so there wasn't much melting going on.

The LCHS Railers take to the court for some warm-up time prior to their Saturday night game against the Springfield Senators. Of course they won the game, this time with a score of 78-48. This week the Railers will play three times: Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. Their Tuesday opponent will be Chatham Glenwood. Because the Railers took the trophy from Chatham at the County Market Classic just a few short weeks ago, it is expected that the Titans will come to the party with something to prove. It could be the second-most exciting game of the season.
