Sunday afternoon, Lincoln became the owner of another piece of art. The Cow in the corn was created by local artists Moses Pinkerton and Jason Hoffman. The statue was erected in the Busby-Turner park on South Sangamon Street just south of Hoffman's statue "Constellation." Early in the day Main Street Lincoln president Tracy Welch arrived to present Pinkerton and Hoffman with a check for just over $2,000; the proceeds of an online fundraiser initiated by MSL executive director Bill Hoagland. It took several hours and a few "technical difficulties" to get the statue standing upright, but by 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, the volunteers working on the project were ready to celebrate a great achievement. Lincoln Daily News was there, on the scene the entire afternoon, and will bring you a complete photo journal of the event in the Tuesday edition.

Lincoln Community High School teacher Sally Aukamp recently attended the Illinois Teachers Workshop: Rocks, Minerals & Mining in Today’s Society, presented by the Illinois Association of Aggregate Producers (IAAP) on July 14th-16th at Rockford University in Rockford, Illinois.

Elementary, middle, high school and junior college teachers refreshed their knowledge of earth science and importance of various minerals and aggregates including crushed stone, sand and gravel.

“Rocks and minerals are used in the foundation of our homes, shingles on the roof, and nearly every material in between, as well as a wide variety of essential products including medicine, food, and electronics,” said Shawn McKinney, IAAP Outreach Manager. “Teachers even made their own toothpaste using limestone and other ingredients.”

Congratulations to these outstanding Lincoln basketball players! Pictured above are Jack Eimer, Eddie Combs, Josh Vinson, Sam Birnbaum, Tate Sloan, Titus Cannon, Zach Morris and Ben Grunder - 2014 8th grade American Youth Basketball Tour Intermediate National Champions! According to coach Joel Vinson, this group was the only school team to participate in this year’s tournament.
