Did you miss your Girl Scout cookies this year?

The Girl Scout Troop 419 will have a cookie booth at Wal-Mart on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cookies will be cash and carry, $3 per box. The troop is the Zion and Faith Lutheran group.

Lincoln Rotary Club looks for host families

The Lincoln Rotary Club is currently looking for four host families for next school year, beginning this August. Rotary hopes to bring an international or foreign exchange male student into our community for the year, with the student scheduled to return home in July 2004.

Each host family will have the responsibility of housing the student for only three months. In this way, four families will get to experience a life from another culture, and the student will get a slice of Americana from the perspective of four different family experiences.

Landfill open extended hours
in April

The city landfill will be open extended hours in April for disposal of landscape waste, according to Street Superintendent Don Osborne. Hours will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.  There will be no Sunday hours.

Relay For Life, a team event to fight cancer

Logan County will host the sixth annual Relay For Life at the Laughlin Center at Lincoln Christian College and Seminary on May 9 and 10. The Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature event. It is truly a celebration of cancer survivorship and an outstanding way to honor those who have triumphed over cancer and to remember those we have lost to the disease.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Illinois. In 2003 it is expected that 57,160 Illinoisans will be diagnosed with cases of cancer. This is equivalent to 157 new cases every day and almost seven new cases every hour. Approximately 25,610 Illinoisans will die of cancer this year, about 70 people a day.

There are about eight million people alive today who have had some type of cancer. Every year more and more people survive cancer. This is especially true of children with cancer because of the new treatments and technology.

Last year the Relay For Life raised over $14,000,000 in Illinois. Of this amount, 60 percent stayed in our state.

By forming a team from your company, church, school, neighborhood or other group, you will not only be part of a great community event, but you will raise funds to improve the quality of life for cancer patients today and the outlook for those diagnosed in the future. We hope to raise $65,000 from this year's event. To reach our goal, we need your support!

This year's festivities officially begin at 8 p.m. Friday and conclude Saturday at noon. The overnight fund-raiser helps to support the organization's programs of cancer research, education, patient services and advocacy.

This year's gold sponsors for the event are CEFCU, Family Medical Center, Lincolnland Communication/Cingular, Wal-Mart, and Lincoln Christian College and Seminary.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has just posted a section titled "National Security Emergencies" on "FEMA for Kids." The new section helps explain terrorism, biological and chemical weapons and how to prepare for these threats. Go to http://www.fema.gov/kids/nse/.

Girl Scout Week celebrates the fun,
friendship and power of girls together

SPRINGFIELD -- Girl Scouts, Land of Lincoln Council, celebrated the history and future of Girl Scouting this past week, March 9-15. Special Girl Scout Week events included the Girl Scouts Care project. Daisy through senior Girl Scouts collected nonfood items such as soap, towels, school and infant supplies. These items will be donated to area day cares and women's and children's shelters.

In Girl Scouts, girls ages 5-17 enjoy a myriad of exciting, skill-building activities designed to enhance self-esteem. This year, Girl Scouts of the USA has implemented a national math, science and technology initiative to nurture girls' early interest and ability in these areas. It's one part of an ongoing effort to prepare today's girls to take on the technological opportunities and challenges of the 21st century.

"During Girl Scout Week we renew our commitment to making sure every girl in the Land of Lincoln Council has the opportunity to grow strong and realize their own potential," states Sue Clark, CEO of Girl Scouts, Land of Lincoln Council.

The annual Girl Scout Week commemorates the 1912 founding of Girl Scouting in the United States by Juliette Gordon Low. In the 90 years since, the organization has helped shaped the lives of more than 50 million women. Girl Scouting cultivates values, social conscience and self-esteem in young girls, while teaching them critical life skills for success as adults. Membership continues to grow as more and more girls take advantage of the unique all-girl environment.

Girl Scouts, Land of Lincoln Council, is chartered by Girl Scouts of the USA and has a membership on nearly 5,000 girls and 1,200 adult volunteers. The council serves 6½ counties, including Christian, Logan, Mason, Menard, Macoupin, Montgomery and Sangamon counties. The Oasis, Logan County's senior citizen center, 501 Pulaski St. in Lincoln, is open weekdays (except holidays) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The center is open also on Friday and Sunday nights for table games. Team up with friends for MS Walk

[MARCH. 4, 2003]  Helping improve the lives of a third of a million Americans is a big job, but it's not overwhelming with a little help from your friends. Bring a group of friends or family members and join other teams on Sunday, April 6, for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society's 2003 MS Walk. Chat with your team as you walk down the 1½-mile course through Kickapoo Creek Park and toward a cure for MS. The walk begins at 1:30 p.m.

Teams of walkers collect contributions for completing the course. The money raised from the MS Walk helps the society continue to lead the way in MS programs, research and professional education.

"I always have fun walking for the National MS Society," said Donita Biggs of Lincoln. "I always meet new people and get to see some of my old friends while I walk. Although I have so much fun, I am really here to help the third of a million Americans living with MS. It's the least I can do."

The National MS Society is dedicated to ending the devastating effects of MS. Thanks to significant advances in research, the FDA has approved several treatments that may alter the underlying course of MS, and early treatment is critically important. People with MS should consult their doctors about using one of the FDA-approved medications and other effective treatments for the symptoms of MS.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, unpredictable neurological disease. MS can cause blurred vision, loss of balance, poor coordination, slurred speech, tremors, numbness, extreme fatigue, problems with memory and concentration, paralysis, and blindness. These problems may be permanent, or they may come and go.

It is a time like no other. Since Sept. 11, 2001, we are a changed nation. Individually, our daily sensitivity toward whom and what we have in our lives has been heightened. We are more conscious and appreciative, first about those we love and see every day. Next, we have a newfound appreciation for those who risk their lives every day as rescue workers and protectors of life and property in our communities. We also now think more about our military men and women who are committed to serve and protect our country. Many are away engaged in battle, some are in waiting to go, all are ready to lay their lives on the line in defense of our freedom.
