Bomke
supports plan to bring more events
to Illinois State Fairgrounds
[MAY 12, 2003]
SPRINGFIELD -- Sen.
Larry Bomke is supporting efforts to bring more events to the
Illinois State Fairgrounds. House Bill 2887, which extends the
ability of the Department of Agriculture to manage events on the
grounds, is headed to the governor.

"The Illinois State Fairgrounds
hosts a number of events throughout the year, including the Ethnic
Festival, rodeos, weddings, fund-raisers, the Springfield Mile and,
of course, the Illinois State Fair," Bomke said. "Events like this
not only provide excellent opportunities for local residents to make
use of the grounds, but they also bring tourism dollars to our local
communities. House Bill 2887 will make it possible to not only
continue hosting these events, but hopefully to bring new events and
festivals to the fairgrounds. This is great news for our local
economy and our local communities."

Under current law, the
Department of Agriculture is allowed to promote use of the
fairgrounds in Springfield and DuQuoin by the public and charge and
collect fees for those events.
House Bill 2887, which Bomke
co-sponsored in the Senate, allows the Department of Agriculture to
manage and organize events in addition to hosting them, which would
provide new opportunities to bring events to Springfield.
Once
signed into law, House Bill 2887 will take effect immediately.
