[NOV. 1, 2003]  SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Rod Blagojevich announced on Thursday the release of state capital 2002 funds for a number of construction projects needed to maintain buildings at state parks managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Improvement projects are slated for Moraine View State Park, Morrison-Rockwood State Park, Randolph County State Fish and Wildlife Area, Starved Rock State Park, Giant City State Park, and Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park.

"These updates provide necessary maintenance on state park facilities and provide greater energy efficiency at some of the facilities, which will mean savings to the state in the long run," Gov. Blagojevich said. "We are committed to maintaining our state parks, which are popular destinations for millions of Illinois residents and visitors to our state and contribute so much to the local economy and the quality of life of Illinois families."

Moraine View State Park, McLean County -- $153,200

The capital improvement funds will be used to upgrade the water plant at the park, including replacing filter media, rerouting backwash water to the sanitary sewer, removing the sand filter, replacing pumps, painting and concrete work. In addition, a water softener will be installed in the shower building. Moraine View State Park is a 1,687-acre site with a 158-acre lake in southeastern McLean County.

Morrison-Rockwood State Park, Whiteside County -- $60,000

The capital improvement funds will be used to replace about 4,000 square feet of roofing systems on the shop and equipment building and on a storage building. The roofs have been deteriorating, and leaks in one roof are resulting in damage to the building’s interior and the equipment inside. Morrison-Rockwood is a 1,164-acre park in Whiteside County.

Randolph County State Fish and Wildlife Area, Randolph County -- $65,000

The funds will be used to repair and replace deteriorating roofs at several buildings at the park and at a satellite site, Turkey Bluffs State Fish and Wildlife Area. The 1,100-acre park includes a 65-acre lake.

The remainder is being used to replace and upgrade the electrical wiring and fixtures in the older portion of the lodge. Starved Rock State Park and Lodge is one of the state’s most popular facilities.

Giant City State Park, Jackson County -- $163,220

Funding will be used to replace doors and windows at the lodge to make the facility more energy-efficient and to upgrade outdoor lighting. In addition, 34 heat pumps and associated equipment also will be replaced, and the east balcony of the lodge will be repaired. Giant City State Park, a 4,052-acre facility, is located south of Carbondale.

Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park, Jefferson County -- $50,000

Funding will be used to replace 33 heat pumps and associated equipment to make the older lodging facilities more energy-efficient. The park provides a variety of recreational opportunities and is located on Rend Lake.
