LDN -- Top Stories

On Tuesday, William Shuttleworth of Newburyport, Massachusetts, came into Lincoln from Clinton on foot. Shuttleworth is walking across America, leaving from his home town on a seven month journey that will end at Vandenberg Air force Base in California in October. Shuttleworth is making this journey to raise awareness for many veteran issues.

Shuttleworth was intercepted at the NOAA weather station in Lincoln by Logan County Tourism Director Morgan Gleason, who grabbed this photo. Also meeting him there, was local veteran Bill Dennis. Dennis served as a guide for Shuttleworth for the rest of the day, taking him to several locations throughout town.

On Tuesday evening Shuttleworth spoke with Lincoln Daily News at the Lincoln Rural Fire Protection District Station where he spent the night. The city of Lincoln Fire Department brought in a meal to be enjoyed by Shuttleworth and members of both fire departments.

Shuttleworth spoke with LDN about his trip thus far, the experiences he has had and the people he has met. He also shared stories from his afternoon in Lincoln, and of course, talked about why he is making this trek across America.

Look for additional coverage of that interview in the Thursday edition of Lincoln Daily News.

On Monday night a time capsule embedded in the cornerstone of the Mount Pulaski High School was opened at the monthly school board meeting. The event was open to the public and many came to see what would be found inside the capsule. The capsule indeed was filled with many interesting items, including a New York Herald dated April 15th, 1865 reporting the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Though the paper was printed on that date, there was a point later in history when the paper was reprinted to be used for various historic purposes including teaching and research. It is unknown at this time if the paper found in the time capsule is an original or a reprint. Either way, we know that the paper was printed prior to 1912 when the time capsule was closed. Experts will be asked to examine the paper to determine when it may have been printed.
