Zonta Club schedules membership meeting The Zonta Club of Lincoln will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the Depot Restaurant. Zonta member Buffie Kelly of Springfield will speak about her trip to the 56th Zonta International Convention in Gothenburg, Sweden, this past summer. Zonta International is a worldwide service organization of executives in business and the professions working together to advance the status of women. The Grand Soirée date Lincoln College Museum has announced The Grand Soirée 2002 will be Saturday, Sept. 14, at 6:30 p.m. in the Davidson-Sheffer Gymnasium on the Lincoln College campus. The Grand Soirée, a Lincoln College tradition, is a major fund-raiser for the Lincoln College Museum. The museum is one of Lincoln’s historic sites and has received national recognition on C-SPAN. All proceeds from the event help support one of the community’s great historic treasures. Ticket price for the event is $75 per person. Get in touch with Logan County Arts Association The Logan County Arts Association is pleased to announce the addition of two new features for your convenience. Jacobs President Logan County Arts Association Local historical society wants names of veterans The Logan County Genealogical and Historical Society is currently collecting names of local veterans. The group would like to have the names and any history of all those from Logan County who registered for service in any and all branches of the U.S. armed forces. People are asked to bring or send in the information to 114 N. Chicago St., Lincoln. The mail deadline for submitting names is Dec. 31. The society will be publishing a booklet in 2003 with the material gathered. Get ready for the sesquicentennials in style The sesquicentennial celebrations for Atlanta and Lincoln will be here soon, and you’ll want to go in style — 1850s style, that is! Learn about men’s and woman’s clothing styles of the 1850s, suitable for the upcoming 150th birthday celebrations, at a free workshop. • Where: Sew Many Friends, 127 S. Kickapoo (on the square), Lincoln • When: Saturday, Sept. 7, 1:30-3:30 p.m. You can select and purchase patterns, sign up for dressmaking classes and see possible fabric selections at the store. Dominic Dalpoas is the executive director. Activities are open to all Logan County senior citizens, regardless of membership. Van trip seating available A shopping trip to Market Place Mall and Prairie Gardens in Champaign is scheduled for Sept. 9, with a 9 a.m. departure from Lincoln. The cost is only $12. Three more people need to sign up or the trip will have to be canceled. Sept. 11 at 8 a.m. the van leaves for a big band cruise on the Celebration Belle, Moline. That trip costs $49.50. Two more people are needed or the trip will have to be canceled. Please call The Oasis, 732-6132, before Sept. 5 for reservations. Weekly bingo games Maple Ridge will sponsor the bingo games on Thursday at 1 p.m. The free drawing this month is for lunch at the Cracker Barrel. Cruise information meeting Sept. 9 you can learn all the details you would like to know about the seven-day Oasis cruise in the western Caribbean with Costa Cruise lines. The trip begins Jan. 26, 2003. You may secure your cabin with an initial deposit of $300 Monday night at the 6 o’clock meeting. Call 732-6132 to let us know if you will attend. Youth focused on doing something good [AUG. 27, 2002] CIEDC thanks Beta Sigma Phi and 14-year-old Aaron Meyrick of local Boy Scout Troop 102 for all of their hard work and dedication in putting together book bags with school supplies for area school children.
Aaron James Meyrick, son of James and Elizabeth Meyrick of Lincoln, was busy earning his Eagle badge this summer. Aaron set out to get donations for school supplies for schools in the Lincoln area by writing letters to local and out-of-state major companies (Lands End and others) and various sports teams (football, baseball, basketball and hockey) asking for assistance in getting the supplies, whether it be through funding or whatever the sources would see fit. When he received the responses and the supply lists from each school, he put together 153 bags. Of these, 42 went to Chester-East Lincoln children, three to West Lincoln-Broadwell, 49 to Community Action and 59 to Beta Sigma Phi. Beta Sigma Phi donated a total of 89 bags and supplies, which included 30 additional bags and supplies that the group assembled. Beta Sigma Phi has been donating school supplies for District 27 low-income children through CIEDC for many years. Family and Friends in the Armed Forces
It is a time like no other. Since Sept. 11 we are a changed nation. Individually, our daily sensitivity toward whom and what we have in our lives has been heightened. We are more conscious and appreciative, first about those we love and see every day. Next, we have a newfound appreciation for those who risk their lives every day as rescue workers and protectors of life and property in our communities. We also now think more about our military men and women who are committed to serve and protect our country. Many are away engaged in battle, some are in waiting to go, all are ready to lay their lives on the line in defense of our freedom. Friends and relatives serving in the armed forces are listed here so we might all hold them in our thoughts, prayers and well wishes.
