State Farm Holiday Classic voting open     Send a link to a friend

[NOV. 25, 2003]  BLOOMINGTON -- Who could forget the day in 1996 when Galesburg's Joey Range scored 55 points? Or how about the dominating three-year presence of Thornwood's Eddy Curry? Or when Rockton Hononegah's Jim Shikenjanski pulled down a tournament record 66 rebounds while scoring over 32 points a game in 1985?

To mark the 25th year of basketball in Bloomington-Normal during the holidays, the Classic Tournament Inc., which organizes and conducts the State Farm Holiday Classic, is inviting fans to vote for the tournament's all-quarter century team.

A list of outstanding performers appears at www.theclassic.org. Fans are invited to vote for their top six players. Voting will continue until the end of the tournament, and the All-Quarter Century Holiday Classic Team will be announced after the Class AA championship game on Dec. 30.

"For a quarter century, the classic has been a showcase of great talent and unbelievable boys basketball," said Dave Oloffson, tournament vice-president. "We wanted to do something special to recognize this fact and celebrate 25 fantastic years. By voting for their favorite players, we are trying to create something fun for our fans to help decide just who was the best to play in our tournament."

This year marks the fifth year State Farm Insurance has been the title sponsor. The tournament got its start in 1975 as the Illinois State Classic. There was no tournament from 1986 to 1989.  A tournament for girls was created in 1997 and now features 32 teams competing in two classes.

A complete list of this year's 64-team field and more tournament information, including advance all-tournament passes and T-shirt sales, can be found at the official tournament website, www.theclassic.org.
