He
looks like a ‘regular Joe,’ a young man straight off
the farm. But the truth is, he has spent the last
nine years addicted to heroin. He's been in prison
five times, and every time except this last one was
back on his drug of choice within 72 hours of being
released. This time, he is six months clean, and
still battling his strong desire to get high every
day. On Thursday, this man addressed a group at
Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital, who are working
to create a four-pillar approach to stopping heroin
use in our communities. He told his story of
addiction and opened minds to the idea that there is
no stereotype of who will get hooked on heroin. It
is out there, it is easy access, and in his words,
when you try to leave it, "it keeps calling you
back." Thursday's meeting brought together a wide
array of individuals and organizations who are
dedicating their time and talents to helping young
people and adults stay out of the horrible cycle
this man has been living. Lincoln Daily News will
bring detailed coverage of this meeting next week.
