This past week LDN pooled as much of our resources as possible to be on the fairgrounds to try to capture as much as possible of the 73rd annual time-honored event in its fullest glory.

Heartland Community College 1st-year curriculum running on all cylinders
Oct. 14, 2009

The slogan for Heartland Community College's "Lincoln 101 Experience" is "You don't have to drive far to go far." The students enrolled in the program couldn't agree more with that slogan.

The Heartland building is modern, bright and crisply appointed. Large for many types of businesses, the offices at 620 Broadway would be considered small by any college or university standards. But the hopes and dreams of all the students who walk through the doors at Heartland are just as big and just as important as they are at any other school of higher learning in the country.

Countless individuals make Harvest of Talents an awe-inspiring event

Oct. 27, 2009

The young couple came into the Lincoln Christian Church Fellowship Hall holding hands. They had arrived 45 minutes early for the auction. As they stood in the doorway, they saw volunteers knocking down the cafeteria tables from the day's luncheon and replacing them with the padded seats for the auction. They looked at each other and then started helping change the seating arrangement. You could see from some of the other helpers asking where things went that they too had decided to pitch in.

It is this sense of volunteerism by so many without being asked, without signing up, without seeking any personal credit that has Harvest of Talents members counting their blessings. The financial side of the blessings from the generosity of so many came to the astonishing total of $83,555.83 for this year. That amount in its entirety will be presented to the International Disaster Emergency Service for hunger relief in 19 countries around the world, including the U.S.

Buses, passenger vans and cars filled the lot at the Lincoln Park District on Saturday. The event was a basketball play day for Special Olympics. Twenty-two teams from all over central Illinois came to compete in this all-day affair. Teams came from beyond and between Danville and Dunlap and Rushville to be a part of the event hosted by the Lincoln Special Olympics.
