Zion Lutheran seventh- and eighth-grade students participated in the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 263 Americanism essay contest. The theme of the essays was “Where Are the American Heroes of Today?” Participation in the contest taught students about the ideals of Americanism, patriotism and good citizenship. The top four students received monetary prizes from the auxiliary. Top finishers were Megan Opperman, first; Kendall Katz, second; Karli Cox, third; and Brent Hunsley, fourth. Megan’s essay will be entered in the district competition.

Pictured, left to right, are Brent Hunsley; Karli Cox; Marlene Schrader, Unit 263 American Legion Americanism chairman; Kendall Katz; Megan Opperman; and Steve Schumacher, ZLS principal and teacher.
